IT AP The genius of Photography -2
1) What are typologies?
Images of "a type", so that a comparison can be made with others. Generally shot at the
same perspective, framing, and lighting, that enable like for like comparison.
2) What was "The Face of The Times ?
It was a typologie produced by August Sander in 1929. Sander was a German portrait photographer who stepped into the world of modernism with this work. He would use similar framing and perspective of subjects but they would be in own environment. This brought a new dimension to the mythology of typology, that showed types of people within social classes and professions. The work was a reflection on the effect of the chaotic nature of post war Germany and its effects on Germany society. It went beyond the confines of typology with portraits that seem to illicit more questions than answers, and was a remarkable series that chronicled a transformative period in history with the rise of Nazism.
3) Which magazine did Rodchenko design?
USSR In Construction
Differing images assembled together by cutting and pasting, to create a new image, or reworking elements of the original image to enhance its overall aesthetic.
5) Why did Eugene Atget use albumen prints in the 1920's?
Because he didn't know how to use a modern camera.
6) What is solorisation and how was it discovered?
Man Ray happened upon it, but unless I missed a bit, the film didn't say how! A quick look on Wikipedia, tells me that it originated from an extreme over exposure that reverses the negative effect. Treatments of those techniques were developed in the dark room for deliberately cultivating the effect.
7) What was the relationship between Bernice Abbott and Eugene Atget?
Abbott was an assistant to Man Ray, while working for him she took Atget's portrait. Little is said about there relationship in the program. Abbott was a surrealist and would have been fascinated and influenced by Atgets work, when she went to America she took 5000 negatives with her, which influenced american photographers, notably Walker Evans.
8) Why was Walker Evans fired from the FSA?
Evans was a propagandarist photographer for the FSA, showing the government and the recipients of its aid , in a positive light. At the time documentary photographs were seen as conveying the truth and making life better. Evans hated this concept, seeing it as wholly inaccurate, he defined his work as documentary style or documentary aesthetic, with much of his work being constructed or contrived. Evans was more interested in his art and his integrity than towing the government line, which lead to his dismissal.
